Lubricants
Lubricants are essential additives in PVC processing. Lubricants provide the viscosity and flow behavior of PVC compositions under the heat and shear experienced in the processing machinery so that the processing is made easier and smooth.
Lubricants have an important role in optimizing the processing properties of plastics by reducing melt viscosity and friction during processing. They have several benefits, including low volatility, improved rheological properties, enhanced machinery output, better surface finish of the final product, and suitability for transparent and food contact applications.
Lubricants are divided into two areas, internal and external lubricants.
External Lubricants
External lubricant solutions help prevent sticking of the hot polymer melt on metal surfaces during calendaring, extrusion, and other processing methods. External lubricant based on natural resources that is well suited for extrusion of rigid PVC pipes and profiles as well as for injection molding in PVC processing.
Internal Lubricants
Internal lubricants function by reducing the frictional forces between PVC molecule chains, thereby lowering melt viscosity. They are polar in nature and exhibit high compatibility with PVC. These additives enable the achievement of exceptional transparency, even at high usage levels, and are less prone to exudation. This, in turn, enhances the welding, gluing, and printing properties of the final product.
